Robby Gordon is not the average racer;
he is a pioneer in motorsports racing with the best
of the best more than 40 weekends a year. Since 2005,
the inception of Robby Gordon Motorsports (RGM), Gordon
is consistently one of the most successful single car
teams in NASCAR's elite Sprint Cup Series. The six-time
off-road champion has become a staple on the NASCAR
circuit as well as a familiar face at the Indianapolis
500 and a fan favorite competitor in the famed Dakar
Rally. Between his NASCAR Cup team and his off-road
team he manages more than 60 people and is respected
as an absolute perfectionist. Despite all of his responsibilities,
one thing for sure is Gordon never forgets to take time
out for his fans.
Born in Orange, CA, Gordon found at a very young age
he was drawn to anything with a motor and he began racing
motorbikes at the early age of eight. Under the guidance
of his father, Bob Gordon, he had many years of experience
before he ever hit the racetrack. He began making a
name for himself racing motorbikes and as soon as he
turned 16, he jumped behind the wheel of a car and never
looked back.
Gordon's most memorable moment is when he won the very
first off-road race he entered, the Vegas to Reno 500.
The years that followed brought Gordon six off-road
championships (Five SCORE Off-Road championships 1986-1990
and one SCORE Trophy Truck title in 1996). Gordon was
also a two-time champion of the Mickey Thompson Stadium
series and has three Baja 1000 wins. But as much as
he loved the no-holds barred spirit of off-road racing,
he was eager to try other racing series. In 1990, Gordon
moved to sports cars where he quickly proved himself.
He won five ISMA GTO races in 1991 and won from the
pole in his first SCCA Trans-Am event at Long Beach,
CA in 1992. He placed in the top five, 18 out of 23
starts driving for Jack Roush. In 1993, he entered the
open wheel series driving an Indy car for none other
than AJ Foyt. Success after success followed in 1995
with two wins (Phoenix and Detroit) and several podium
finishes in the CART series. In the Indianapolis 500,
Gordon scored three top five and five top 10 finishes.
He led 53 laps in just 10 starts in the Indy 500. He
also had four consecutive class wins at the 24 Hours
of Daytona and three consecutive wins in the 12 Hours
of Sebring. 1997 marked Gordon's first of four "Double
Duty" attempts that include racing the Indianapolis
500 and the Coca-Cola 600 race the same day.
Meanwhile, Gordon became increasingly involved in NASCAR's
Winston Cup series. From 1991, he drove for various
Winston Cup teams until he formed his own NASCAR team
in 2000, running seventeen events. After impressive
performances in both 2001 NASCAR Winston Cup road races,
Gordon was hired to drive for Richard Childress Racing's
(RCR) No. 31 Lowe's Chevrolet to finish out the season
where he got his first Winston Cup oval track top 10
and a victory at New Hampshire Motor Speedway (RCR's
first victory with the 31 team). The decision to run
a full Winston Cup season in 2002 landed the RCR Cingular
Wireless No 31 five top-10 finishes, including a third
place finish at Watkins Glen. The 2003 season proved
equally exciting when Gordon went door to door with
Jeff Gordon for a stunning victory at Sonoma Raceway
and then won Watkins Glen to become the fourth driver
to ever win both NASCAR Winston Cup road races in a
single year.
In 2004, while still driving for RCR in the NASCAR
Nextel Cup series, Gordon decided to start his own NASCAR
Busch series team. Even though his team only entered
a limited number of races, they brought home a victory
at the fall Richmond race in RGM's 10th event. This
early success fueled his desire to become his own boss
in the NASCAR Nextel Cup series the following year.
The start of 2005 marked a new beginning for Gordon
in the NASCAR Nextel Cup series where he became the
owner and driver of the RGM No 7 car. The same year
Gordon also added another entry into his already impressive
resume as he drove for Volkswagen in perhaps the most
grueling motorsports event - The Dakar Rally. Gordon
loved the event so much that he immediately began planning
to tackle the Dakar Rally with his own effort. In 2006,
in addition to his NASCAR Nextel Cup team and winning
his third Baja 1000, he entered his own Robby Gordon
Off-Road (RGOR) Jim Beam/Toyo Tires Hummer H3 in the
Dakar Rally. The 2007 Dakar marked Gordon as the first
American to ever win a stage and he finished an impressive
eighth overall. In 2008 Gordon's Team Dakar USA entered
not one but two RGOR Monster Energy/Toyo Tire Hummers
in the Central Europe Rally and Gordon won two specials
and finished 10th overall. The second RGOR Hummer driven
by BJ Baldwin finished seventh overall. 2008 also marked
another first for Gordon when he entered the third annual
Prelude to the Dream race at Tony Stewart's Eldora Speedway.
In his first attempt to race a late model on dirt, he
finished second only to Tony Stewart. The event raised
over a million dollars for The Victory Junction Gang.
The 2010 season marks his sixth season as a single
car owner/driver in the NASCAR Sprint Cup series. He
has consistently maintained a top-35 starting position
which grants him a starting position for the race each
week. The RGOR Team Dakar USA Hummer had their best
finish to date with a third place overall finish at
the 2009 Dakar Rally in Argentina and Chile. Gordon
became the 2009 SCORE Desert Series Trophy Truck Champion.
Gordon's passion for racing is evident. He is an absolute
perfectionist and if you ever get the chance to get
close enough to look inside one of his race cars you
will see the meticulous attention to detail that he
insists upon. To be associated with Robby Gordon is
to be associated with adventure, opportunity, commitment
and determination. He is an internationally recognized
name in motorsports and one of the most diverse drivers
in the world. Racing has been keeping Gordon "out
of trouble" for well over 25 years and the only
thing he plans on getting into anytime soon is Winner's
Circle.
